Jean Valjean kurgusal bir karakter ve Victor Hugo'nun 1862 romanı Sefiller'in baş kahramanıdır. Hugo bu karakterde ekonomik bunalım döneminde kız kardeşinin çocuklarını beslemek için ekmek çaldığı için hapis cezasınına çarptırılan ve cezaevinden kaçmak için çeşitli girişimlerde bulunan ve cezasını çektikten sonra normal bir hayat sürmek için karakterin mücadelesini anlatır. Valjean karakteri ayrıca Mösyö Madeleine, Ultime Fauchelevent, Mösyö Leblanc ve Urbain Fabre gibi romanlarda da geçmektedir. Diğerlerinin aksine, Mösyö Leblanc'da Valjean karaktein asıl ismi değil beyaz saçlarından dolayı kendisine verilen bir takma addır.
